Helpful Interview Tips:

Do:
Give a firm handshake, be friendly and engaging, make eye contact, smile, and be 15 minutes early. Make sure you pass the "likability test."

Don't:
Use first names, sit down (until invited), show anxiety or boredom, look at your watch, discuss religion or politics, or ask about benefits, salary or vacation.

Avoid 5 deadly traps:

1. Failing to listen to a question.

2. Answering a question that was not asked.

3. Providing superfluous information (keep answers brief and to the point).

4. Attempting to interview without preparation.

5. Failing to ask pertinent, insightful questions.

A successful interview is a collaborative process which provides the neccessary information to make an informed decision on whether there is a good match between your abilities and experience and the employer's needs. Consider yourself as a co-pilot working with the interviewer to reach a successful outcome.

EXECUTIVE RESUMES

Your most important tool in the job search process is your resume. John Lucht, Executive Recruiter Guru states “Nothing is more important to your success in changing jobs than the document that defines who you are and describes what you’ve accomplished. It must be where you can’t be and sell when you’re not there.

Developing your resume is a collaborative process. It starts with an initial discussion regarding your background, objectives, and target market. This is followed by comprehensive development of your employment history using customized worksheets. The focus is on gathering information regarding your skills, strengths, and accomplishments.

Accomplishments are the key ingredients to a powerful resume. Employers want to know what you did, how you did it, and what were the results. Unlike mid-level manager achievements, senior executive accomplishments tend to be more detailed and usually involve more leadership, forward-thinking, and problem-solving skills. Your accomplishments should not only reflect the bottom-line result, but also the challenge faced, and the process used to achieve that result. This “CAR” (challenge, action, result) format is used for all your major accomplishments.

INTERVIEW EDUCATION & TRAINING

Your resume generated interest and created a desire by the employer to see you. Great! Now they want to meet you. Are you ready? There are 7 other candidates just as eager and enthusiastic as you are to get this job. To get a competitive edge, you need to understand the different aspects of the interview process. The Career Focus Interview IQ Test is designed to help you understand this process. Understanding what the interviewer is looking for will assist you in tailoring your responses accordingly.

The interview itself is somewhat like a performance - you can shine or bomb! To increase your chances of succeeding, Career Focus offers the Interview Rehearsal Clinic. This Clinic involves role playing nearly 50 questions that cover the 12 areas of employer concern. Responses are evaluated on both content and delivery. This Clinic also helps you develop your 2-3 minute “personal commercial” (a valuable networking tool). The goal is to polish your presentation skills and ensure that valuable employment information is not left out.

Videotape Interview Training is also available and highly recommended. With this service, you receive visual and audio feedback on your responses. Each response is also reviewed and critiqued.

With telephone interviewing becoming more popular, Career Focus offers tips on how to ace the telephone interview in a 30-minute session.

With any Career Focus interview service used, you will receive an Interview Pre-Planning Worksheet that will identify key pieces of information (e.g., phonetic pronunciation of company name and employees) you should have prior to the interview, with this tool in hand, you're prepared to win in any situation.
